This Famous Deli Is A Must-Visit For Film Lovers Visiting New York City

New York City is a food hub known for its iconic dishes, like pizza and street-cart hot dogs. The Big Apple is also home to legendary restaurants, including the famously extravagant Serendipity3 and Katz's Delicatessen. Established in 1888, Katz's is said to be New York City's oldest deli. But believe it or not, this is not necessarily the Jewish-style eatery's claim to fame.

Katz's, which should be included in any itinerary if you only have one day in New York City, has been featured in several films. This includes "Enchanted," starring Amy Adams and Patrick Dempsey, "Donnie Brasco" with Johnny Depp, "We Own the Night," and "Contract on Cherry Street" with Frank Sinatra, to name a few.

However, the most notable film shot at Katz's is none other than "When Harry Met Sally." Released in 1989, the film stars Meg Ryan and Billy Crystal as Harry Burns and Sally Albright, two friends who go from loathing to loving each other. In what is perhaps the film's most memorable scene, the pair are dining at Katz's when Ryan fakes an orgasm, prompting another patron to say, "I'll have what she's having."

Diners can sit at the same table where the scene transpired. It's easily distinguishable, thanks to a sign with an arrow hanging above it, pointing right to it. But film history aside, the pastrami is another reason why Katz's should not be missed.

What's on the menu at Katz Delicatessen?

The best way to describe Katz's Delicatessen is "old school." The restaurant has hundreds of framed pictures on its walls, featuring famous clients. Jake Dell, Katz's owner, told Business Insider this nostalgia was one reason for the eatery's longevity. But more importantly, diners can devour classic Jewish-deli staples, such as potato latkes, matzoh ball soup, bagel with cream cheese and lox, and most famously, their highly-coveted, piled-high pastrami sandwich.

In fact, Dell revealed that 15,000 pounds of pastrami are sold weekly, served on either rye or club bread. Katz's also offers other sandwiches piled equally as high, such as corned beef, Reuben, brisket, turkey, egg salad, chicken salad, and more. With the amount of meat you're getting, it's worth every penny you spend.

Katz's Delicatessen is located in New York's Lower East Side, only a short subway ride from one of the biggest tourist attractions in NYC: Times Square. It's open Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m., and open 24 hours on weekends! You can expect a long line, so keep that in mind for your visit.
